Classic Negroni Recipe: Ingredients, Ratio and Method

The classic Negroni uses equal parts gin, Campari and sweet red vermouth: a 1:1:1 ratio. For one drink, measure 30 ml of each, stir over ice and garnish with orange. No shaker is needed.

Glasses of red Negroni with ice and orange slices

Ingredients for one Negroni

  • 30 ml gin (3 cl)
  • 30 ml Campari (3 cl)
  • 30 ml sweet red vermouth (3 cl)
  • Ice
  • Half an orange slice or an orange twist

How to make it

  1. Fill a chilled lowball glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the gin, Campari and vermouth.
  3. Stir gently until the ingredients are mixed and the drink is cold. The melting ice also dilutes the cocktail.
  4. Add the orange garnish and serve.

These measures follow the International Bartenders Association's Negroni recipe.

Choose your gin and vermouth

Start with a London dry gin and a sweet red vermouth. Dry white vermouth gives a different drink. Once you know the equal-parts recipe, compare one gin or vermouth at a time while keeping the measures unchanged.

What if it tastes too intense?

Check that the drink is properly chilled and stirred. A splash of soda changes it into a longer variation. For a sparkling option without gin, try our Negroni Sbagliato.
